Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy

Available at the Owens Chiropractic Clinic

Myofascial Trigger Points (MTPs) are extremely common and become a painful part of nearly everyone's life at one time or another.

Clinical characteristics of Trigger Points are a history of pain related to muscular activity and characteristic physical findings.

Skeletal muscle is the largest single organ of the human body and accounts for nearly 50% of body weight. There are 200 paired muscles (total of 400) in the human body. Anyone of these can develop a Myofascial Trigger Point that refers pain and motor dysfunction, often to another location.

The severity of symptoms caused by MTPs range from agonising, incapacitating pain to painless restriction of movement and distortion of posture.

Examination of the muscle reveals circumscribed spot tenderness in a nodule that is part of a palpably tense band of muscle fibres, pain evoked by pressure on the tender spot and referred pain distant from the nodule. There is also painful limitation of stretch range of motion and some weakness in that muscle.

Treatment consists of ischemic compression (i.e. finger pressure on the belly of the muscle), cold spray and stretch and dry needling into the Trigger point.
